A New Way to Teach Gemology
New York— Kids’ craft and toy brand Super Smalls, known for blending jewelry design with play, is stepping into publishing. On Oct. 14, the brand will release its first book, The Super Book of Gems: Birthstone Magic, Science, Facts, and Fun.
The 128-page volume is recommended for children eight and older, but its vibrant illustrations and approachable content make it appealing for jewelry lovers of all ages. Written by sisters and brand co-founders Maria Dueñas Jacobs and Bianca Gottesman, the book promises to introduce gemology in a way that feels more like play than study.
Gems, Science, and Storytelling
At the core of the book is a birthstone guide covering colors, symbolism, and trivia for every month. Contributions from major houses like Van Cleef & Arpels, Bulgari, Cartier, Irene Neuwirth, Marlo Laz, and Foundrae bring credibility and sparkle.

But this isn’t just about glossy pictures. The book also explains the Mohs Hardness Scale, diamond anatomy, and the Four C’s, giving young readers a foundation in gemology. It’s a bridge between science and wonder, mixing geology lessons with jewelry storytelling.
While the focus is on natural stones, the cultural rise of lab-grown diamonds and sustainable jewelry looms in the background—proof that the next generation of jewelry enthusiasts will likely grow up asking about both beauty and ethics.
A Mission to Inspire
“This book was born out of our mission to inspire creativity, imagination, and wonder,” said Dueñas Jacobs. “It’s meant to be flipped through again and again—by kids, parents, and anyone who loves beautiful things.”
Published by Union Square & Co., the book features a foreword by Stellene Volandes, editor-in-chief of Town & Country and editorial director of Elle Décor. Volandes, who has authored Jewels That Made History, adds prestige and authority to the project.
Beyond the Book: Bracelets and Rocks
The launch coincides with new Super Smalls products:
- Super Gems Charm Bracelet ($39), with 12 charms representing emerald, pearl, ruby, sapphire, aquamarine, and even diamond.

- Gemstone Rock Box ($32), a playful collection of rose quartz, turquoise, tiger’s eye, obsidian, and more.

- Other gifts from Union Square & Co., including sticker kits, bingo sets, and DIY cards.
The book itself retails for $25 and is available for pre-order on the Super Smalls website.
My Take
By introducing gemstone science to kids, Super Smalls is seeding future generations of jewelry lovers—and perhaps future buyers of ethical jewelry and lab-grown diamonds. The industry should take note: curiosity starts early, and brands that educate today may reap loyalty tomorrow.
