Passport to Global Trade — ESG and the 2024 Global Sustainable Development ESG Jewelry Brand Rankings

· ESG

In recent years, companies across all industries worldwide have been continuously enhancing their Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) practices and principles in their daily operations. By implementing strategies that support the three pillars of sustainable development (sometimes referred to as "Profit, Planet, and People"), these enterprises are responding to the demands of socially conscious employees, investors, and customers for corporations to take greater responsibility and obligations on these issues.

The global jewelry industry has been embracing the fundamental principles of ESG for some time now. For example, longstanding efforts have been made to reduce the environmental impact of mining and to avoid conflict diamonds and humanitarian issues. However, most jewelry consumers, designers, and retailers believe that the industry can and should do more. Particularly, consumers in the United States, Canada, Europe, and Australia are increasingly focused on ethical, environmentally friendly, and sustainable consumption concepts. They want brands or companies to demonstrate their moral integrity, not just boast about it on social media or at conferences. Even pioneers in this field admit that it's challenging to know where to start and how to make consumers aware. The AIDI International Intelligent Diamond Association has been a leading practitioner in ESG certification and promotion within the global jewelry industry for sustainable development. This represents the responsibility and value of AIDI as a non-profit organization.

Global jewelry practitioners should understand what to measure in terms of sustainable development ESG and how to measure it, providing a solid benchmark. One effective approach is to develop a sustainability report, creating a framework to raise awareness, advocacy, and aspirations for these endeavors. This report is part of a continuous certification process, and annual certification demonstrates responsibility to consumers and ensures their interests. As a professional, non-profit organization, AIDI is committed to this mission.

International jewelry giants like Signet, Tiffany, and Pandora have all released sustainability reports detailing their ESG goals and progress toward achieving them. But even if you're a small enterprise without the budget for a dedicated internal team or full-time consultants, you can take steps to make your initial attempt at sustainability reporting less daunting. AIDI believes that sustainable development is an industry ethical concept that should not be limited by the size of the enterprise. Therefore, AIDI provides services equally to small and micro-sized enterprises.

The global jewelry industry has established a clear development trend: sustainable development ESG jewelry defines the entire industry and serves as a passport to the global market. This trend is determined by consumer preferences, not by any single organization or company. Based on this industry concept, the AIDI International Intelligent Diamond Association focuses on the promotion and research of sustainable jewelry ESG. After surveying over a thousand jewelry brands, retailers, manufacturers, and service providers worldwide, we are publishing this list for global jewelry practitioners' reference!

To simplify, the research focuses on the following points:

  1. Brand Advocacy
  2. Environment and Ethics
  3. Product Materials
  4. Traceability
  5. Sustainable Corporate Development

How can China's jewelry industry carry out specialized ESG certification and obtain a passport to global trade? The International Intelligent Diamond Association (AIDI), the Gem and Diamond Center of Canada (GDC), and the Shanghai Guochuang ESG Development Center are jointly providing relevant certifications for jewelry enterprises aiming to expand overseas.

Introduction to the Shanghai Guochuang ESG Center:

To accelerate the improvement of enterprises' ESG capabilities and levels and to cultivate new productivity, Shanghai Guochuang established the Shanghai Guochuang ESG Development Center in May 2024. The center has built an ESG ecosystem jointly participated in by the government, small and medium-sized enterprises, industry organizations, and professional service institutions. Collaborating with the Shanghai SME Development Service Center and platform resources, the center is conducting ESG-related academic research and report writing, policy consulting, knowledge training, practical courses, and other activities. It is leading the addition of an ESG module to the Shanghai SME Development Service Center's service cloud platform and hosting various industry ESG forums, competitions, and list selections.
