🚨 Jewelers BEWARE: Trunk Shows Are a Criminal’s Dream – Here’s How to Avoid Becoming a Target

Trunk show season is here—but while you’re planning your layout and Insta invites, don’t forget security. 🚨 According to the Jewelers’ Security Alliance (JSA), these public-facing events can be a magnet for thieves—and sometimes even violent crime.

Here’s how to stay stylish and safe 🛡️👇

📵 1.

Think Before You Post

Yes, you want to hype the event—but don’t overshare your travel plans.
“Criminals follow you on Instagram just like your customers do,” warns JSA’s Scott Guginsky.

✅ Do: Use email or private invites to share show locations Don’t: Publicly post your full itinerary or tag every stop

🚚 2.

Ship It—Don’t Carry It

If possible, use a shipping company to transport your merchandise.
“The safest trunk shows are the ones where designers arrive and leave with nothing,” says Guginsky.

If you must travel with inventory:

Bring armed security

Never travel alone—especially on setup or breakdown day

Use tracking devices (AirTags, GPS) in your display cases or bags

🔒 3.

Hide Your Inventory (or Ship It Later)

Instead of leaving with unsold items, store them in the host’s vault and retrieve later or ship out after.

Also smart:

Maintain a detailed inventory list + photos

Double-check your insurance coverage for travel and unattended merchandise

👀 4.

Stay Aware—Always

Designers and store staff should be on high alert for sketchy behavior:

Suspicious cars or plates in the parking lot

  • Strangers hovering but not buying
  • Anyone asking unusual questions about the layout or schedule
  • Tip: Call your local police department ahead of time to request extra patrols during show hours. They’re not just there to file reports—they can help prevent incidents.

🚘 5.

On the Road? Stay Smart

If you think you’re being followed:

Call 911 immediately

  • If your car breaks down, drive on the rim to a public place if needed

Do NOT pull over alone in a dark area

  • And the golden rule: Never take inventory home. It’s not worth the risk to you or your family.

TL;DR:

💬 Limit public posts

  • 🚛 Ship instead of carry
  • 🚨 Use security + trackers
  • 🔐 Store leftover goods safely
  • 🚔 Call for backup if you sense danger
  • If you see something weird, report it:

Stay safe, stay smart—and make your trunk show a sparkling success. ✨
