After two decades shaping De Beers’ ethical legacy and global influence, Feriel Zerouki — one of the most respected and outspoken voices in the diamond world — is leaving the company at the end of October. And her departure is sending quiet shockwaves through the industry.
Currently chief trade and industry officer at De Beers, Zerouki has been instrumental in building the frameworks that define modern diamond accountability. She helped create Tracr, De Beers’ blockchain-based diamond-tracking platform, and spearheaded GemFair, a program supporting artisanal miners in Sierra Leone — proof that transparency and human impact could coexist with luxury.
Zerouki will remain president of the World Diamond Council (WDC) through May 2026, continuing her work representing the global trade at the Kimberley Process, the international body aimed at eliminating conflict diamonds. She also serves on the executive committees of the Responsible Jewellery Council and the Jewelers Vigilance Committee, giving her one of the most far-reaching platforms in ethical jewelry governance.
De Beers confirmed to JCK that Zerouki’s role will not be replaced directly — her responsibilities will be redistributed internally. But few doubt the gap she leaves behind. “Feriel is one of the most capable and intelligent people in our industry,” said Ronnie VanderLinden, vice president of the WDC. “She will absolutely succeed at whatever she chooses to do next.”
CEO Al Cook called her “pivotal in upholding integrity and provenance across the global diamond industry,” noting that her impact would “leave a lasting mark.”
As for Zerouki, she leaves with gratitude — and a hint of momentum. “Being part of De Beers has been an extraordinary journey,” she said. “I’m proud of what we’ve built together and excited for what lies ahead.”
With her husband, Mahiar Borhanjoo, still serving as De Beers’ chief commercial officer, one question now dominates trade circles: Will Zerouki take her ethical diamond vision independent?
If she does, it could reshape the conversation about what the “next De Beers” might look like — one that blends legacy with transparency and purpose.
