The Diavik Diamond Mine, tucked deep in Canada’s far north, just pulled off something epic — and got a major sustainability award to prove it. 🙌
🏅 Winner of the TSM Environmental Excellence Award
Why? For building the largest off-grid solar installation in Canada’s territories — a game-changer in clean energy AND mining! ⚡🏔
Here’s what they did:
🔋 Launched in July 2024
🌞 3.5-megawatt solar facility
🪞 6,620 bi-facial solar panels (they capture light from BOTH sides!)
📊 Powers up to 25% of the mine’s energy during closure phase (starts 2026)
🌍 Saves 1.1 million litres of diesel per year
🚗 Cuts 2,900 tonnes of CO₂ annually — equivalent to taking 630 cars off the road!
What’s even cooler? ❄️
These panels LOVE the cold — they’re up to 15% more efficient in freezing temps! Perfect for the North.
🤝 This wasn’t a solo mission. Diavik partnered with:
- Yukon-based solar contractor Solvest
- The Tłı̨chǫ Investment Corporation, the business arm of their Indigenous partners
💡 What's next?
As Diavik prepares to shut down mining operations, they’re exploring ways to redeploy this solar system across northern Canada — bringing green energy to even more remote regions 🏘️⚡
✨ This is more than mining. It’s a blueprint for how extractive industries can give back — sustainably.
