Russia’s top security agency has accused a high-profile Armenian politician of being linked to a massive diamond smuggling scandal.
Khachatur Sukiasyan, an MP from Armenia’s ruling party and a known businessman, has been named by Russia’s FSB in an operation targeting stolen high-quality rough diamonds from ALROSA. These diamonds were allegedly destined for Armenia, swapped out with lower-quality stones before being smuggled.
💰 The suspected target? ADM Diamonds — an Armenian company reportedly tied to Sukiasyan — though both the MP and the company have denied any connection.
👥 Several Russian and Armenian suspects were caught attempting to steal over ₽1.7 million ($18,000) in rough stones. Authorities claim they found more raw diamond materials, luxury jewelry, and cash during home raids.
🧊 The FSB says the smuggling was orchestrated by the Baghikyan brothers, who are now internationally wanted.
But ADM Diamonds fired back, calling the allegations “fake, unfounded, and unsubstantiated.” They insist the company has only one owner — Artak Baghikyan — and no political ties. The company emphasized it sources all diamonds legally from the UAE and Hong Kong.
👔 Sukiasyan’s office labeled the accusations “pure fake news,” linking them to past smear campaigns and political motives.
Despite the denials, RFE/RL reported Sukiasyan’s presence at ADM’s 2019 plant opening. Investigative outlet Hetq.am also noted he seemed well-informed about the company’s contracts.
This case continues to unfold — and the diamond industry is watching closely 👀
