As we start 2024, the jewelry industry is mourning the loss of several long-standing retail businesses, many of which have been pillars of their communities for over a century. While it’s always sad to see these businesses close their doors, some have been forced to shut down due to growing concerns around crime, while others are shifting to online or private operations to adapt to the changing landscape.
For over a decade, JCK has compiled a yearly list of U.S. jewelry stores that have closed or announced their closures. This year’s list is particularly emotional, featuring many beloved names in the industry that have left a lasting impact on their communities.
Unfortunately, at least three of the stores on this year’s list shut down because of crime-related issues, underscoring the ongoing challenges that jewelry retailers face. Despite the setbacks, many of these businesses are continuing their operations in new ways, whether through online platforms or offering private consultations.
While it’s a sad chapter for the jewelry industry, the resilience of these businesses continues to shine. We honor them for the years of dedication and service they’ve given to the industry and their customers. For those still fighting the good fight, the story is far from over.
