Sybil and David Yurman Reveal the Untold Story of Their Jewelry Empire

broken image

In a candid discussion during New York City Jewelry Week, Sybil and David Yurman reflected on their celebrated jewelry brand, their creative journey, and their plans for the future—including the possibility of renaming the company simply as Yurman to reflect its evolution into a family-run business.

The Early Days of David Yurman

The couple founded their company in 1980, one year after getting married. Sybil revealed that naming the brand after David was a strategic choice to avoid splitting her identity as both a painter and a jeweler.

They now acknowledge their son Evan Yurman, the brand’s president, as the driving force behind the idea to rename the company. “It’s a legacy, and that comes with family,” said David, who emphasized he has no plans to retire at 82.

The Iconic Cable Bracelet and Creative Vision

The cable bracelet, created in 1982, became the company’s signature design and remains a hallmark of their success. David credits the bracelet to a moment of inspiration while twisting wires. “I still wear the first one I made. It was a simple helix,” he said.

Sybil emphasized the importance of staying true to their creative vision. “If you feel it in your body, you know when it’s right or wrong. You don’t compromise.”

Their Love Story and Family Legacy

The Yurmans shared personal anecdotes, including their first meeting in 1969 and how their love blossomed. Sybil remembered David’s charm and creativity, while David described the unforgettable moment Sybil walked into the room wearing a Peruvian poncho and boots with bells.

Their son Evan has been part of the business since childhood, creating his first design—a cable-accented cufflink—that was later picked up by Neiman Marcus. Stories like these are highlighted in their new book, Sybil and David Yurman: Artists and Jewelers, which combines family memories, original art, and archival materials.

A Lasting Legacy

The Yurmans’ philosophy of devoting themselves to art and technique resonates throughout their journey. As Sybil said, “Anything is possible if you follow a dream. Put all of your energy into it.”

Their reflections provide inspiration for aspiring designers and a deeper understanding of the family legacy behind the David Yurman brand.
