Starting December 15, 2024, the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) will enhance its emerald grading reports to include detailed information about filler materials used in emerald treatments. This change reflects the growing industry demand for greater transparency and accuracy in gemstone certification.
Free Identification Service for Launch
As part of the rollout, the GIA will offer an optional filler identification service at no charge during the initial launch period. This initiative aims to meet market needs and foster trust in the trade.
Tom Moses, GIA’s Executive Vice President and Chief Laboratory and Research Officer, stated:
“This change is driven by evolving market demands. As concerns about the extent and composition of fillers in emeralds continue to grow, we are adapting our reports accordingly.”
What the Reports Will Include
GIA’s reports will now provide information on:
- Filler Presence: Confirming whether an emerald contains fillers.
- Filler Type: Identifying the substance used if fillers are present.
The report will categorize fillers as one of the following:
- Type A: Includes oil, wax, and/or natural resin.
- Type B: Consists of synthetic resin.
Returning to Roots
GIA first offered emerald filler identification services more than 20 years ago. However, the focus later shifted to quantifying filler content due to the recognition that fillers can be removed, altered, or blended. This updated approach revisits and builds upon GIA’s earlier practices.
A Response to Industry Trends
The decision to enhance emerald grading reports underscores GIA’s commitment to supporting the jewelry trade with precise and actionable information. By providing these insights, the organization helps stakeholders make informed decisions while setting a higher standard for gemstone certification.
