Brecken Branstrator, former National Jeweler senior editor and now editor-in-chief of GemGuide, is gearing up for the highly anticipated Tucson gem shows. With years of industry experience and a deep passion for gemstones, she shares key insights into market trends, pricing shifts, and what to watch for in 2025.
Gem Pricing Trends & Market DynamicsAccording to Branstrator, gem pricing continues to be dictated by a combination of demand and supply. However, post-pandemic mining slowdowns have led to a tighter supply, pushing prices to record highs. The “big three”—sapphire, ruby, and emerald—remain among the most expensive stones, particularly sapphires and rubies, which show no signs of declining.
Interestingly, for the first time in years, cuprian tourmaline (commonly referred to as Paraiba tourmaline) has seen a price drop in the 2 ct. fine-extra fine category. Reports from recent Hong Kong and Bangkok shows suggest that buyers are beginning to push back against soaring prices, signaling a possible shift in the market.
Gems to Watch & Market ShiftsTourmalines continue to present great value, particularly blue-green varieties. Branstrator notes that untraditional stones and colors are gaining popularity as high prices push buyers to explore alternatives. Denim-blue sapphires, moss agate for bridal jewelry, and unique color-zoned gems are drawing increased attention.
Despite Pantone’s selection of Mocha Mousse as the 2025 color of the year, Branstrator sees little impact on gemstone sales. While brown zircon may benefit from marketing efforts, she doesn’t anticipate a significant surge in demand due to the Pantone influence.
Must-Visit Dealers & Tucson FavoritesFor unique finds, Branstrator recommends Coast to Coast Rare Stones at GJX, known for rare and exotic materials, including fluorescent opals.
Beyond the gem shows, she has one major goal: finally trying a Sonoran hot dog, a local Tucson favorite.
With shifting market trends and emerging gemstone preferences, Tucson 2025 promises to be an exciting event. Will the market continue to embrace alternative stones, or will classic gems maintain their stronghold?
