For Alison “Ali” Ruth, the founder of Ruth N.Y., jewelry design is more than crafting accessories—it’s about weaving stories of nostalgia, joy, and playfulness into every piece. Once aspiring to become a Broadway actress, Ruth’s love for costumes and fashion eventually led her to a career in jewelry design, launching a brand that connects people to their past with whimsy and charm.

A Creative Evolution
Ruth’s artistic journey began with a bachelor’s degree in Studio Art at Baldwin Wallace University, where she studied under the acclaimed artists David and Roberta Williamson. Early experiences included internships with Coach, Adelington Design Group (a subsidiary of Kate Spade), and Lele Sadoughi, as well as three years at Tory Burch, where she honed her skills in hardware and trim design.
“Both Coach and Tory pushed me to explore new materials and innovative techniques like 3D printing,” Ruth recalls. “It taught me the value of a strong brand voice.”
Ruth N.Y.: A Brand Built on Memory and Playfulness
Launched in 2020, Ruth N.Y. reflects Ruth’s mission to craft “heirlooms for your inner child.” Her jewelry features responsibly sourced gemstones and recycled materials, echoing her commitment to sustainability and individuality.
Highlights include:
- The 14k Bow Signet Ring ($1,350), inspired by jewelry Ruth wore as a child.
- The Puffy Nameplate Necklace (starting at $345), reminiscent of vintage pencils and door signs.
“Jewelry is so much more intimate than other accessories,” Ruth explains. “I want to create pieces that evoke joy and nostalgia, from childhood memories to modern self-expression.”
A Childhood of Craftsmanship and Artistry
Raised in Erie, Pennsylvania, Ruth was surrounded by creativity. Her grandfather’s woodworking and glass sculptures, along with her grandmother’s diverse crafts, profoundly influenced her. Early jobs, such as working at the Sassy Peacock consignment shop, deepened her appreciation for vintage fashion and accessories.
“I still cherish some of the jewelry I collected back then,” Ruth says, highlighting how these experiences shaped her design ethos.
Looking Ahead: A Vision Rooted in Storytelling
For Ruth, her journey from Broadway dreams to jewelry design represents a full-circle moment. By blending nostalgia with playfulness, Ruth N.Y. stands as a tribute to the beauty of growing up while staying connected to one’s inner child.
“My goal is to make jewelry that tells a story—a piece you never want to take off,” Ruth says.
