After two years of research and data analysis on the global lab-grown diamond, gemstone, and cultured pearl industries, the International Artificial Diamond Institute (AIDI) has officially announced the release of its white paper on responsible and sustainable jewelry industry practices. The document, set to launch on March 15, outlines ethical and sustainable guidelines for the entire supply chain of lab-grown diamonds, gemstones, and cultured pearls.
A Commitment to Ethics and Sustainability
AIDI’s white paper will be published on its official website (www.aidi.org) and across major global jewelry industry media platforms. The guidelines will be mandatory for AIDI members to ensure ethical business conduct and consumer protection.
“Our mission at AIDI is to promote ethical commercial practices across the industry—from laboratories and farms to retail stores—while safeguarding consumer rights,” the organization stated. “This white paper is not just about setting standards; it’s about shaping a future where sustainability and responsibility go hand in hand. We believe every lab-grown diamond, gemstone, and pearl should shine without compromising ethical and environmental values.”
Comprehensive Industry Standards
AIDI began drafting the white paper in 2023 and worked with board members to refine the guidelines. The document covers critical aspects such as:
- Legal compliance
- Management systems
- Due diligence processes
- Human rights and labor conditions
- Health and safety standards
- Environmental management
- Disclosure and transparency
- Evaluation and certification systems
By implementing these principles, AIDI aims to create a trustworthy and sustainable global jewelry industry that aligns with both ethical business conduct and consumer expectations.
Voluntary Compliance with Industry-Wide Adoption
While participation in the guidelines is voluntary, AIDI will regularly publish a list of compliant members on its website. A preliminary certification phase will allow members to develop processes that meet the new standards.
To support the transition, AIDI will collaborate with third-party partners to offer training modules and streamlined certification processes, ensuring members can fully comply with both the white paper’s principles and AIDI’s existing ethical guidelines.
Creating Transparency in the Jewelry Market
By launching this white paper, AIDI aims to enhance transparency in the global jewelry industry. “Our members must adopt a clear approach to sustainable supply chain management to protect workers, communities, and consumers,” the statement emphasized.
As a nonprofit industry organization, AIDI champions sustainability in the jewelry sector, advocating for consumer rights and ethical business practices in the global lab-grown materials and jewelry industry.
