ALROSA has officially begun development of the Karpinsky-2 kimberlite pipe in Russia’s Arkhangelsk region, signaling a major expansion in its diamond production empire. Located in the M.V. Lomonosov diamond field, this new pipe joins Arkhangelsk and Karpinsky-1 as part of a growing hub of diamond extraction.
The Karpinsky-2 pipe boasts over 40 million tonnes of diamond-rich ore. After successful pilot mining in 2018 and commercial viability confirmation, ALROSA accelerated its move toward full-scale operations in 2025. CEO Pavel Marinychev personally greenlit the design phase during his recent visit to the regional subsidiary, Severalmaz.
During that visit, Marinychev applauded Severalmaz for exceeding ore extraction targets and achieving a 9.4% increase in processing — recovering over 1.2 million carats of rough diamonds in just five months. ALROSA also emphasized sustainability by pushing forward a water recycling project and investing in better facilities for workers, such as a new gym at the shift village.
With over 1 billion carats in reserves and 33 million carats mined in 2024 alone, ALROSA already controls 30% of the global and 90% of the Russian diamond market. The Karpinsky-2 project is set to further reinforce its dominance and stimulate the local economy.
