GDC Launches Pilot Blockchain Jewelry Report Service, Paving the Way for Sustainable Lab-Grown Diamond Jewelry

· GDC

GDC (Global Diamond Certification) in Toronto, Canada, is launching a pioneering service that uses blockchain technology to certify lab-grown diamonds and gemstones. The service will conduct in-depth analyses of submitted products, including the 4Cs of lab-grown diamonds (color, clarity, cut, carat), shape, color, gemstone characteristics, and composition. Additionally, production traceability, ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) certification, and sustainability reports will now be incorporated into blockchain indexing for the first time.

This new service will begin in early 2025, and GDC invites companies interested in participating in the pilot program to contact them.

Moving forward, the GDC jewelry reports will provide detailed descriptions of the submitted products, including metal verification and, for the first time, the verification of mounted lab-grown diamonds and gemstones from D to Z grades. The reports will also include clarity, color, and carat weight information with blockchain digital certification.

Each report will include a valid GDC report number and specific diamond grading, along with a blockchain network link for further verification. Detailed information on the current labeling will also be included.

Additionally, two optional paid services will be offered: providing details of the jewelry's processing and setting, and a 360-degree video.

Jack Ford, Executive Vice President and Chief Blockchain Jewelry Authentication Officer at GDC, stated, “This service is based on our confidence in the development trends of blockchain technology and its application in the jewelry industry, particularly for industrial products like lab-grown diamonds. It aims to strengthen consumer confidence in lab-grown diamond jewelry.”

The GDC report numbers for lab-grown diamonds and jewelry will be alphanumeric, ensuring each piece of jewelry has a unique and secure identification. This identification will also serve as a reference for the resale value of lab-grown diamond jewelry in the recycling market.

Next, GDC will promote this project in both Canada and China. GDC is also a member of the AIDI International Smart Diamond Association.

The AIDI Industry Market Committee commented on this technological trend, stating that this market strategy is a powerful consumer rights protection measure for lab-grown diamond jewelry consumers and is set to be a major trend for the global industrial smart jewelry industry.
